Hilo is a town on the windward side of the Big Island. Hilo is pronounced Hee-lo (lo rhyming with go) with the accent on the first syllable. Hilo has a couple of meanings: to twist or braid, the first night of the new moon, and it was the name of a famous polynesian navigator. Ok, Hilo misspellings, let's see. Heelo, Heelow, Hilow, Hi lo, hi low, hielo, and hi-lo.

If you are having a hard time finding a Moo Moo or a Moomoo dress, try spelling it Muu Muu or Muumuu. The correct spelling for this traditional hawaiian, flowing and colorful woman's dress is actually mu'u mu'u (correctly pronounced moo-oo moo-oo) but most places online will have it muu muu. It is generally pronounced moo moo here in Hawaii.

Waikoloa is an important one and a hard one - Waikoloa is a village on the West side of the Big Island. There is also a Waikoloa Golf Course and a Waikoloa Road and Waikoloa Beach Drive, and several hotels on the coast seem like they are in the Waikoloa Village, (like the Hilton Waikoloa Village and the Aston Shores at Waikoloa) but they really are about 6 miles away. Waikoloa is the name of a certain kind of wind in Hawaiian, so simplisticly I guess you could say it means windy. Sometimes these areas do get really windy, but most of the hotels are built in ways to minimize the wind on their grounds. I've never noticed wind at the Hilton.

So, some misspellings are: waikola, waikloa, waikoaloa, waikoalo, wikoloa.

Hello, my roommate and I are making a trip to Kona this summer. My grandparents went years ago and just raved about it. My question is this, how much coffee are you allowed to bring back? Also are you allowed to bring plants back anymore? When my grandparents went, they had elephant ears and a bird of paradise shipped back. I was wondering if you are still able to do that.

Well, I'm not sure about the coffee, and the local company I called didn't know either. I would assume you can take back as much as you can carry (as long as it is properly packaged and labeled), but maybe you should check with the agricultural station at the airport on your way in. Regarding the plants, everything has to be inspected by the agricultural station at the airport, but many places here sell small plants that are already packaged and labeled as safe for agricultural export - even walmart sells them. I *know* you can bring back the bird of paradise seed.
