Sea Mountain at Punaluu Review
editors note:
Sea Mountain is a condo located on Punaluu Beach in Kau on the Big Island. Punaluu Beach a black sand Beach and large, sea turtle haven located just after the 56 mile marker on Highway 11. The entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is just after the 28 mile marker on Hwy 11. The road to South Point and the Green sand Beach is between the 69 and 70 mm, and Kona starts somewhere around the 100 mile marker ... just to give you an idea of how isolated Sea Mountain is. If you want to be near the national park, you could stay in a lodge or vacation rental in Volcano, which is less than a mile away. The good thing about Punaluu is it is the closest beach area to the entrance of the national park - about 4 miles closer than Hilo Beaches - plus there may be less rain than Hilo. However, this beach is not a fantastic swimming or snorkeling beach. There is a very cold underwater spring that feeds the bay, making the water cold and cloudy. The turtles hang out on the beach with you though, which is pretty neat.
